Gastric Bypass in Turkey

What is Gastric Bypass?

The surgery involves using surgical staples to create a small pouch at the top of the stomach. This pouch then bypasses the rest of the stomach. It then connects to your small intestine. This means less food is needed to feel full and you will absorb fewer calories from the food you eat.

Gastric bypass surgery, also known as Roux-en-Y (roo-en-wy) gastrectomy, is a type of weight loss surgery that involves creating a small pouch from the stomach and connecting it. Direct new pouches are created with the small intestine. After gastric bypass surgery, swallowed food enters this small stomach pouch and then directly into the small intestine, bypassing most of the stomach and the first part of the small intestine.

Gastric bypass surgery is one of the most commonly performed types of weight loss surgery. Gastrectomy is done when diet and exercise don't work or when you have serious health problems due to your weight.

Types of Gastric Bypass

Each type of bariatric surgery has advantages and disadvantages. Be sure to talk to your doctor about it. Here's an overview of common types of weight loss surgery:

Roux-en-Y (roo-en-wy) gastric bypass

Roux-en-Y is the most common method of gastric bypass. This surgery is usually irreversible. It works by reducing the amount of food you can eat in one sitting and reducing nutrient absorption.

The surgeon removes the upper part of the stomach. He then separates it from the rest of the stomach. The resulting bag is about the size of a walnut. However, it can only hold about one ounce of food. Normally, the stomach can hold about 3 liters of food.

The surgeon then cuts out the small intestine and stitches part of it directly into the pouch. Food then enters this small stomach pouch and then directly into the small intestine that is sewn into it. Food passes through most of the stomach and the first part of the small intestine and goes directly into the middle of the small intestine.

Sleeve gastrectomy

With sleeve gastrectomy, about 80 per cent of the stomach is removed. A long, tube-like pouch is then left. That tiny stomach can't hold that much food. It also produces less of the appetite-regulating hormone ghrelin, which can reduce the desire to eat.

The benefits of this procedure include significant weight loss and no bowel re-routing. Sleeve gastrectomy also requires a shorter hospital stay.

Biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch

This is a two-part surgery where the first step is to perform a procedure similar to a gastrectomy. The second surgery involves connecting the end of the intestine to the duodenum near the stomach (duodenal switch and biliary drainage), bypassing most of the intestine.

This surgery limits how much you can eat. It also reduces the absorption of nutrients. While extremely effective, it comes with higher risks, including malnutrition and vitamin deficiencies.

Before Gastric Bypass in Turkey

Before having weight loss surgery, you will be referred to a specialist clinic to assess whether the surgery is appropriate.

This may involve checking:
physical health – use of blood tests, x-rays, and scans
Diet and eating habits
mental health – for example, ask about your expectations for surgery and whether you have any mental health problems; This is to assess whether you can cope with the long-term lifestyle changes needed after bariatric surgery.

You may be advised to follow a low-calorie diet for several weeks before surgery to help reduce the size of your liver. This may make operation easier and safer.

After Gastric Bypass in Turkey

After weight loss surgery, you will usually not be able to eat for 1-2 days to allow your stomach and digestive system to recover. You will then follow a specific diet for a few weeks. The diet starts with liquids only, then moves on to pureed and very soft foods, and finally to regular foods. You can have multiple restrictions or limits on how much you can eat and drink.

You will also have regular medical check-ups to monitor your health for the first few months after weight loss surgery. You need lab tests, blood tests, and various tests.

Healing Process

You will likely spend a day recuperating in the hospital, then a few weeks at home before you feel ready to return to work. You may need to avoid strenuous physical activity for up to six weeks, and it may take up to twelve weeks to resume your normal diet.

Recovery from your gastrectomy takes about three to six weeks. Your "real" recovery lasts a lifetime. Indeed, right after surgery, you must follow a strict diet and exercise regimen to maintain weight loss.

To optimize your chances of surgical success, it is important to carefully follow your surgeon's post-operative instructions. These guidelines will outline when to watch, the type and amount of fluids and foods to eat, and activities to limit.
