What is Nose Job?
Rhinoplasty (RIE-no-plas-tee) is a surgical procedure that changes the shape of the nose. The motivation for rhinoplasty may be to change the shape of the nose, to improve breathing, or both.
The structure of the upper part of the nose is bone and the lower part is cartilage. Rhinoplasty can change cartilage, skin, bone, or all three. Talk to your surgeon to find out if rhinoplasty is right for you and what benefits it might offer you.
When planning rhinoplasty, your surgeon will consider other facial features, the skin of your nose, and what you would like to change. If you are a candidate for surgery, your surgeon will develop an individualized plan for you.
Rhinoplasty Methods
There are six different techniques for rhinoplasty operation.
Most plastic surgery procedures vary in the technique used by surgeons. Rhinoplasty is no exception to this rule. There are six types of rhinoplasty:
- Open rhinoplasty

Before Rhinoplasty
Fasting before surgery. For rhinoplasty, you will be given general anesthesia. For safety reasons, it is very important not to eat or drink anything after midnight of the day before surgery. Preparing yourself by drinking more water before you start your fast will help you feel good and healthy.
Do not wear cosmetics. Makeup and other cosmetics can irritate surgery. Wash your face in the morning and don't wear makeup on the day of surgery.
Choose the right clothes. You'll wear a surgical gown for your rhinoplasty and then put on your clothes afterward. Make sure that the clothes you choose are comfortable and will not affect your sensitive nose after surgery. This means you should wear a shirt with buttons that you don't need to pull over your head.
After Rhinoplasty
After surgery, you should rest in bed with your head above your chest to reduce bleeding and swelling. Your nose may be blocked due to swelling or a splint placed inside your nose during surgery.
In most cases, the inner dressing remains in place one to seven days after surgery. Your doctor also attaches a splint to your nose to protect and support you. It is usually in place for about a week. Mild bleeding and oozing of old mucus and blood are common for several days after the operation or after the dressing has been removed.
Your doctor may place a "dropper”- a small piece of gauze held in place with tape - under your nose to absorb water. Change the dressing as directed by your doctor. Do not put the dropper in your nose.
Healing Process
To further reduce your risk of bleeding and swelling, your doctor may ask you to follow precautions for several weeks after surgery. Your doctor may ask you to:
Avoid strenuous activities such as aerobics and jogging.
- Take a bath instead of a shower when you have a bandage on your nose.
- Don't blow your nose.
- Eat foods rich in fiber, such as fruits and vegetables, to avoid constipation. Constipation can cause stress, putting pressure on the surgical site.
- Avoid extreme facial expressions, such as laughing or laughing.
- Brush your teeth gently to limit movement of the upper lip.
Wear clothes tied in the front. Don't pull clothing, such as shirts or sweaters, over your head. Also, don't wear glasses or sunglasses on your nose for at least four weeks after surgery to avoid pressure on your nose. You can use cheek patches or glasses on your forehead until your nose is completely healed.
